The Ten Ancient Taboos of the Immortals
A Grimmveil Chronicle ⚜
Preserved within the Grand Archives of Grimmveil
Every immortal child is taught that power alone has never sustained Grimmveil.
Kingdoms have risen.
Empires have fallen.
Ancient bloodlines have vanished into legend.
Yet the realm endures because its oldest peoples accepted one truth:
Power without restraint becomes ruin.
From the earliest councils of Day Walkers, ancient fae, elves, dragons, witches, and the noble vampire houses came a sacred code known as The Ten Ancient Taboos.
Though traditions differ between kingdoms, these laws remain among the oldest principles shared throughout Grimmveil.
I. Never Reveal the Measure of Your Years
Time belongs to the immortal alone.
One's true age is never demanded, nor freely offered, for centuries shape every soul differently. Wisdom is earned through deeds, not numbers.
II. Do Not Seek Knowledge That Was Sealed for the World's Protection
Not every truth was lost.
Some were deliberately hidden.
Forbidden tomes, cursed relics, and ancient names remain sealed because history has already paid the price for their discovery.
Those who seek such knowledge must also accept its burden.
III. Never Twist the Destiny of Mortals for Vanity or Amusement
The lives of mortals are brief, precious, and their own.
Immortals may guide.
They may protect.
But to reshape a mortal's destiny for pride, entertainment, or personal gain is considered one of the oldest betrayals of the Balance.
IV. Wealth Is a Stewardship, Never a Throne
Centuries allow fortunes to grow beyond imagination.
The noble houses teach that wealth exists to strengthen kingdoms, preserve knowledge, and protect future generations.
To hoard riches while others suffer is considered the mark of a ruler unworthy of immortality.
V. An Oath Spoken Is an Oath Bound
Among immortals, promises are sacred.
To break one's sworn word is to fracture more than trust.
It weakens the very magic that binds the ancient houses together.
Some say broken oaths leave echoes that linger for centuries.
VI. Honor the Sacred Places of the Ancients
The forests.
The standing stones.
The forgotten temples.
The dragon sanctuaries.
The ancient archives.
These places are older than kingdoms themselves.
To defile them is to insult every generation that came before.
VII. Never Steal Another's Memories
Memory is identity.
To alter, erase, or imprison another soul's memories without consent is among the gravest crimes recognized throughout Grimmveil.
Some wounds of the mind never heal.
VIII. Immortality Must Never Be Forced
Eternal life is not a gift when given without choice.
To compel another into immortality, whether through blood, magic, or forbidden ritual, violates one of the oldest laws ever written.
An endless life without willing acceptance becomes its own prison.
IX. Compassion Is the Duty of the Long-Lived
Immortality carries responsibility.
To ignore suffering when one has the power to help is considered a failure of character, not merely a failure of action.
Strength exists to protect.
Not simply to endure.
X. Keep the Veil
The greatest responsibility of every immortal is to preserve the boundary between Grimmveil and the mortal world.
Magic is not meant for spectacle.
Power is not meant for applause.
The Balance survives because the Veil remains.
Those who recklessly expose the hidden world endanger both realms.
The Final Teaching
The ancient houses often disagree.
Kings wage wars.
Councils fracture.
Bloodlines rise and fall.
Yet every generation eventually rediscovers the same truth.
The greatest threat to Grimmveil has never been monsters.
It has always been immortals who believed themselves above these laws.
For kingdoms may survive dragons.
They may survive wars.
They may even survive the Bloodborne.
But no realm can survive when its oldest guardians forget why these taboos were written.
So the elders teach.
So the archives remember.
And so Grimmveil endures.
End of the Chronicle.
