The Creek of Lost Souls

A Grimmveil Legend ⚜️

In the hidden, untouched corners of Grimmveil, there flows a creek unlike any other. It is known by few, and those who have discovered it often wish they hadn’t. This creek, winding through dense forests, beneath towering trees, and through forgotten lands, has been given many names by the locals. Some call it the Creek of Lost Souls, others the Wailing Stream. But none can deny the eerie and dangerous pull it holds over both mortals and immortals alike.

The creek itself seems ordinary enough, its waters clear and cool, babbling merrily over smooth stones. Birds sing in the trees nearby, and the air smells fresh and untamed. Yet, as the sun sets and the shadows grow long, the creek transforms. The water no longer flows with a peaceful murmur. It begins to hiss and churn, rising as if driven by some unseen force.

It is here, at this moment, that the real magic begins.

The origins of the creek are as old as the world itself. No one truly knows when or how it came to be. Legends passed down through generations speak of an ancient ritual gone wrong, of a forgotten coven of witches who sought to harness the spirits of the dead to increase their power. They performed their dark magic beside the creek, drawing souls from the realm of the dead into the flowing water. The ritual was meant to bind those souls into servitude, creating an army of spirits to do their bidding.

But the witches underestimated the power they sought to control.

Instead of gaining dominion over the dead, they unleashed a curse. The souls, angered and unbound, flooded the waters, and with them, the very essence of the creek was forever changed. From that day onward, anyone who ventured too close would feel the pull of the spirits, their fate tied to the restless dead within the current.

The creek now serves as a boundary between worlds, a place where the veil between life and death thins until it is almost transparent. Mortals who wander too near find themselves lost in the fog that rises from the water, hearing voices calling out from within the mist. Some hear the cries of loved ones long gone. Others hear the bitter laments of spirits wronged in life, now trapped in the endless flow.

It is not only mortals who are drawn to the creek. Immortals of many kinds, witches, vampires, and Silverveined wanderers have been known to approach its banks, lured by whispering spirits or the promise of forbidden power. None have ever left unchanged. The creek does not give freely. It always takes more than it offers.

There are tales of a witch who sought to commune with the dead, hoping to steal their ancient knowledge. She stood by the creek chanting in the old tongue, and the water rose around her like grasping hands. It pulled her beneath the surface, and her body was never found. Her voice still echoes along the banks, woven into the flow of the water, forever part of the curse she awakened.

There is also the story of a vampire who drank from the creek, seeking a form of immortality beyond even that of his kind. The water stole his soul while leaving his body untouched. Now he wanders the banks in hollow silence, trapped between worlds, neither living nor dead, a cautionary shadow for any who would dare to drink from the stream.

The creek’s power stretches far beyond simple curses. The souls within it reach for the living, whispering into their thoughts, planting longing, grief, and false hope. Some mortals are driven mad by the voices. Others step willingly into the water, convinced they will find peace or answers waiting for them below. None ever return.

Some believe the creek holds the key to the past, a way to speak with those who once walked Grimmveil. But the creek twists every desire. What is asked for is never what is given.

The last living soul to return from the creek was a Silverveined wanderer named Vaelor Ashborne. He went not for power, but to retrieve a soul that had been trapped there for centuries, one bound to his own bloodline. What passed between Vaelor and the spirits was never recorded. When he emerged, his eyes were no longer the color of moonlit silver but darkened as if shadow itself had taken root within them. He walked away from the creek, but a piece of him was left behind, bound forever to the Wailing Stream.

Now the creek waits, as it always has. Its waters flow endlessly, patient and hungry, a reminder of the thin line between life and death. Those who turn away are the fortunate ones.
